As a candidate for Mayor, I believe that resilience and infrastructure are the keys to Folly Beach’s future. Our island’s success, both as a community and as a tourism destination, depends on our ability to protect our coastline, strengthen our infrastructure, and plan ahead for the challenges of rising tides and stronger storms.
The City of Folly Beach’s Local Comprehensive Beachfront Management Plan, updated every five years, provides a clear and science-based roadmap for protecting our shoreline. The plan reflects our community’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and to preserving the very foundation of our local economy, our beach.
The goals are simple but vital:
• Ensure that our beach remains a safe, accessible space for both nature and people.
• Protect and restore dunes, which are our first line of defense against storms.
• Identify areas where renourishment or dune rebuilding may not be effective so resources can be focused where they will make the greatest difference.
But this plan goes beyond sand. It calls for a comprehensive approach that connects beach management to infrastructure, drainage, and long-term resilience planning. It emphasizes:
• Coordinating with state and federal partners to secure future renourishment funding.
• Improving drainage and stormwater systems to protect roads and homes.
• Strengthening public access while protecting natural barriers.
• Maintaining a high FEMA Community Rating to reduce flood insurance costs for residents.
These are not abstract goals. They are real investments that protect our homes, our roads, and our economy. Every dollar spent on resilience pays off many times over by preventing damage, preserving property values, and keeping Folly open and welcoming to the visitors who sustain our local businesses.
Our beachfront is more than a view. It is our greatest economic engine and our community’s front line of defense. As Mayor, I will make sure we turn plans like this into action, investing in the infrastructure that keeps Folly strong, sustainable, and thriving for generations to come.
Our beachfront is a treasure that we should protect for future generations, and this plan provides a roadmap for doing so. I fully support this comprehensive strategy for protecting Folly’s greatest asset.
