Arctic Avenue: Building Connections to Build a Better Folly

Arctic Avenue Plan

The Arctic Avenue Plan isn’t just about wider sidewalks, safer crossings, and turtle-friendly lighting—it’s about transforming Arctic into a safer, more welcoming “main street” that supports residents, businesses, and visitors alike. And the truth is, projects of this scale don’t happen in isolation. They require teamwork, timing, and connections beyond our island to turn vision into reality. A mayor must understand that knowing how to work with others, build partnerships, and bring people together is essential to achieving the best results for Folly Beach.

How One Connection Sparked an $8 Million Opportunity

As a member of the ReThink Folly Road committee, I met an individual from the Council of Governments (COG). While discussing Arctic Avenue and the need to recoup grant funding that had been pulled back, he mentioned a Safe Streets grant.

That spark set things in motion:

  • • I immediately researched the grant requirements.
  • • I spoke with City Staff to review what was needed.
  • • We saw that to qualify, Folly needed a Safety Action Plan in place.
  • • Staff pushed to get the plan onto the next Council agenda, and we approved it at the following meeting, allowing us to meet the grant deadline, which was only a month away.

Because of that collaborative effort, we were able to submit a competitive proposal. Today, Folly is being considered for an $8 million grant that could fund much of the Arctic Avenue plan.

This is how good things happen for Folly Beach: a mayor who makes connections, identifies opportunities, understands the requirements, and works with staff and council to see them through. Big, sustainable solutions don’t come from one person; they come from teamwork and a vision for the future.

Learn More About the Potential Changes

While the City is still working to secure funding for the Arctic Avenue Plan, I’ve received several questions about the proposed redesign and wanted to share a clear, easy-to-understand overview of what’s being considered. Read a full overview here.
